mizume / Japanese Betula Grossa
It is also called Mizume-zakura because its bark and its look like cherry blossoms. This wood is quite smooth and easy to whittle similar to the cherry blossom. It is a widely used for the production in Yamanaka lacquerware, along with keyaki and tochi. The origin of the name of Mizume is that sap like water appears when the bark is damaged.
